Stunning Iceland

On Sunday it was time to explore more of Iceland. We were picked up in the morning at our hotel and headed south-east of the island to Eyjafjallajökull glacier which is one of the smaller ice caps of Iceland. It consists of a volcano which is completely covered by an ice cap. The volcano has erupted relatively frequently since the last glacial period, most recently in 2010.

After lunch we went for a walk in this amazing canyon near by – this is some of the most beautiful nature I have ever seen.

Our next stop was Seljalandsfoss. The waterfall drops 60 m (197 ft) and is part of the Seljalands River that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull. Seljalandsfoss is best known for the walking path that runs behind the curtain of water where you can enjoy a truly unique viewpoint from this angle.

Our last stop was Urriðafoss located right off highway 1.
Urriðafoss is a waterfall in Þjórsá River. Þjórsá is Iceland’s longest river, and Urriðafoss is the most voluminous waterfall in the country. This mighty river drops down by the edge of Þjórsárhraun lava field in beautiful and serene surroundings. Þjórsárhraun lava field is the result of the greatest lava flow on earth since the Ice Age.

Back in Reykjavik we had dinner at the MAR restaurant, located at the old harbour area. We had lobster as main course and probably too much wine, but the dinner and service was excellent and this evening was definitely the most fun part of the weekend. We visited a nightclub after dinner and the evening turned out to be a real blast. It was hard to get up next day and catch the flight back home.

Iceland is an amazing island and has a lot to offer with both city-life and amazing nature. Reykjavik is a very urban city with so many great restaurants. Iceland’s nature is stunning and next time I would like to stay longer and see Gullfoss, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, travel to the northern part, stay at Deplar Farm and go hiking.
