You don’t always have to travel far – sometimes less is more and great adventures are waiting in your backyard. Living on the west coast of Norway, I am fortunate to have mountains and fjords in my backyard. I love hiking and I try to go hiking as often as I can during the summer and fall season. Summit hikes with fjord or ocean views are among my favorites and I can find great hikes like this only 20-30 minutes drive away from my home.
Hodnafjell is one of my nearby favorites with beautiful view of the Grindafjord and mountain peaks in the district. The summit is 325 meters a.s.l. and the hike is about 2 km long and it takes about 30 minutes up.
Another favorite is Dreng in Førde, a 30 minutes drive from my home. The summit is 272 meters a.s.l. and has great views of Førdespollen, the Bømlafjord, the mountain Siggjo on the island Bømlo, Halsenøy and Vikebygd. The hike up is 1,8 km long and it takes about 40 minutes up. If you do this hike I also recommend you to visit the Rex Garden in Førde. This is a beautiful garden located in a forest by the fjord, with lots of rhododendrons, playground for the kids and sitting areas were you can enjoy the flowers and a beautiful view of the fjord. The garden also has many amazing wooden sculptures made with a chain saw by a very talented friend of mine. You can read more about the garden here.
